House Votes to End COVID Health Emergency Despite White House Opposition

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to end the public health emergency related to COVID-19, with some Democrats in support of the Republican proposal.

Despite President Biden’s White House opposing the measures, the House passed two bills that would end the health emergency and end the government’s requirement that federal healthcare workers be vaccinated against COVID-19.  The Pandemic is Over Act and the Freedom for Health Care Workers Act both passed with the Republican majority.  While The Pandemic Is Over Act had every Democrat vote against it, the Freedom for Health Care Workers Act received support from seven Democrats.

The bills will now head to the Senate, however, the White House said President Biden would veto the bills if they made it to his desk.

“While COVID-19 is no longer the disruptive threat that it once was, it makes no sense for Congress to reverse this protection for vulnerable patients, as well as our health care workers who have given so much to protect us,” the White House said.
