Resolution Urges Study on Black Bear Hunting

A resolution that urges and requests the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to study the feasibility of allowing a black bear hunting season is pending final house approval. The black bear is the state mammal.

The resolution is sponsored by Rep. C. Travis Johnson, D-Vidalia. A black bear hunting season would help control the population of the species. When the species was removed from the threatened list in 2016, wildlife officials estimated the Louisiana black bear population had doubled to about 500 across the state.
