Officials Needed for High School Sports

By Eric White

The High School Football Season will kick off with Jamborees on August 24th and 25th. Each year, the LHSOA calls for officials for not just Football but all sports under the LHSAA umbrella. The first step is to register with the LHSOA and become certified.

Being an official is a great way for former athletes to stay connected to the game they played and make a little extra money. Some local officials that were successful include Greg Bonin, Major League Umpire 1984-2001, Greg Gautreaux, who called the Superbowl. Longtime Lafayette Parks and Recreation Director Gerald Boudreaux, who has called the Final Four, Ryan Broussard, and Bryan Borill are still active in the college ranks. I apologize to those I don’t know because they were so good like an official should be. I never learned their name because they let the spotlight fall on the athletes. Many officials work various jobs that allow them to officiate volleyball, football, track and field, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, and many other sports.

The bottom line: registering to be an official doesn’t cost anything. Attend a few meetings and ask questions of current officials, then see if it is the right thing for you.

While we are on High School Sports, consider contacting your favorite program or the local program in your area to volunteer. Whether it is the chain gang, ticket booth, concession stand, statistician, or public address, most programs will accept the help. Encourage your non-athletic children to be a part of the programs also.

When it comes to baseball, there have been many coaching changes in the area. Some of these new coaches are in unfamiliar territory and need help. From personal experience, a relationship of helping a coach can be so rewarding. Get involved.
