Today’s Country Legend was born March 18, in Sledge, Mississippi, the fourth of eleven children of poor sharecroppers. His elder brother, played Negro league baseball before entering the ministry. his mother purchased him his first guitar at age 14 and he taught himself to play. He was traded while playing baseball for a team bus. He had 52 top-10 hits, 30 of which made it to number one. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
