Today’s Country Legend was born, the youngest of three sons  in Floydada, Texas

He first found success in the 1960s as a member of folk-pop trio

His straightforward yet smooth bass-baritone voice, soft tones, and imposing build earned him the nickname “The Gentle Giant”.

Fifty of his songs reached the country Top Twenty, and forty-five made the Top Ten; seventeen went to #1.Scoring at least one major hit every year between 1974 and 1991,

2010 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame
